The European Commission announced that it is considering imposing sanctions against Germany. The scandal erupted after the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe on May 5 admitted that buying up government bonds of the Union countries by the EU Central Bank is a violation of German law.

The European Commission appealed to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, which recognized that the law is on the side of the European Commission, since the monetary policy of the European Union is exclusively within the competence of the EU as a whole, and not of individual countries.
